With his four business partners, C.L. Hardwick, the company’s founder and namesake, applies for the company charter in Cleveland, Tennessee, and begins the woolen mill that would become America’s longest continuously operating Made in America apparel maker.

2. Elk Brand Manufacturing Company
This company was founded in 1911 and is noted for producing high-quality, professional garments.
The Buckskin Overall Manufacturing Company, situated in southern Kentucky, first established for running clothing related operations in the year 1911 as the Buckskin Overall Manufacturing Company. Overalls were manufactured and sold to merchants over the course of the Ohio Valley region. Customers requested more work wear products in the 1920s, so the business added work shirts to its range.
In the 1950s, the company expanded its product line to include pants, dungarees, and sport shirts, as well as women’s and girls’ jeans. During this time, the company changed its name to Elk Brand Manufacturing Company to reflect the breadth of its product line.

Valley Apparel LLC is the result of a continuous manufacturing legacy that dates back to 1959. They are a tiny company based in Knoxville, Tennessee, with manufacturing facilities. John Niethammer, the company’s CEO, has more than 50 years of government contracting and industrial experience.
Their ancestors have a long history of serving in the US military. This manufacturing tradition began shortly after the Korean War, continued through Vietnam, and is presently being carried out in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
